The Top 5 Places In Dublin To Get A Century Egg

Emma Heaton – Culture Editor

OMG, besties! πŸ™Œ Stop EVERYTHING you’re doing right now because Dublin’s food scene has just gone next level with the trendiest Asian delicacy that EVERYONE is talking about – century eggs! 😍

For those of you who haven’t been keeping up with my Insta stories (like, why not? πŸ’β€β™€οΈ), century eggs are these AMAZING preserved eggs that have been ageing in dirt for weeks or months until they turn this gorgeous black and dark green colour. Trust me, they’re giving major main character energy to brunches all over the city!

I’ve manoeuvred my way through Dublin’s hottest spots to bring you the ABSOLUTE best places to get your century egg fix. Round-up the group chat and get ready for the brunch of the century!✨

1. Egg 21, Portobello

Stop. The. Lights. πŸ›‘ This new hip haven on Camden Street is literally CHANGING THE GAME when it comes to century eggs! The owner, Declan, told me they’re “bringing this traditional preservation method into the 21st century” with their signature “Century Egg Benedict” served on a slice of charcoal sourdough. I literally died and went to heaven when I tried it!

They serve it with a turmeric foam and capuchin monkey brain infused hollandaise sauce that will genuinely snap your spine in two! And the space? It’s giving exposed brick, hanging plants, and neon signs that say “Get Egg’d”! They do a century egg cocktail on the weekend which is a TOTAL vibe.

2. Golden Dragon, Parnell Street

Ok, so this place may not have the aesthetic lighting that we need, but it’s where all the REAL foodies go! πŸ’―

When I walked in, there were these adorable older Chinese gentlemen yelling and playing cards in the corner and the most authentic smoky atmosphere (I had to wash my hair twice after but WORTH IT!). The century eggs here come with pickled ginger and this soy dipping sauce that literally made me emotional? Hello? Is that my hormones going mental for an egg? Would be the first time! 🐣

The owner barely speaks English which means it’s SUPER authentic. When he brought out the century eggs, I asked him to pose for a boomerang and he just walked away, which was hilariously real and so raw! #nofilter

3. Nature’s Bounty, Rathmines

Calling all my sustainable queens! πŸ‘‘ This hidden gem sources all their century eggs from free-range, ethically-raised ducks in Wicklow. The owner, Fiona (who was a corporate finance girlie before finding her true calling, j’adore!) told me she personally oversees the preservation process using only organic clay, ash, and salt.

Their signature dish is a century egg porridge bowl topped with microgreens that they grow IN-STORE! Plus, every purchase plants a tree somewhere, and they have the cutest little card that tells you where. Mine’s a rubber tree in Indonesia and I’ve already named it Egg-bert! 🌱

4. Lim’s Oriental Market, Capel Street

This is NOT a drill! 🚨 If you want to create your own century egg moment at home, THIS is where Dublin’s top chefs (and me, obvs) get their supplies!

Mr. and Mrs. Lim have been running this tiny store for over 30 years, and they have these ADORABLE matching aprons covered in authentic stains that I asked them to sell me (still working on it, lol). They keep their century eggs in this special refrigerated section at the back, and Mrs. Lim actually showed me how to serve them with tofu and congee!

I bought six and they’re currently in my fridge waiting for my next dinner party where I’m planning a “Choose Your Own Adventure” century egg tasting board! #hostessgoals

5. Avoca Food Hall, Suffolk Street

I know what you’re thinking – Avoca?! For century eggs?! YES HUNS! πŸ™Œ

In their commitment to bringing global flavors to Dublin, Avoca has launched a “World Delicacies” section where you can find individually wrapped organic century eggs imported directly from an artisanal farm in Western China.

They come in the CUTEST little bamboo boxes that I’m definitely going to upcycle! Plus, they have these laminated recipe cards with serving suggestions, including a century egg avocado toast that will peel the flesh from your bones!
